One of the requirements for admission to the IEP is a letter of financial support from a bank. In this letter, the bank states that the student will have enough money available for the student’s period of study in the US. Students who will have a scholarship do not have to send a letter from the bank; instead, they must send a copy of a letter explaining the terms of the scholarship.
Below is a sample letter of financial support. The bank which provides the letter of financial support may use the sample letter on this page to write the letter or the bank may write the letter in a different way. However, the letter should contain all of the information shown in parentheses in the sample letter.
Also, note the following:
The letter of financial support should be written in English on bank letterhead.
The letter must be an original.
The letter must not be more than 12 months old.
The letter must state the amount of money available to the student in US dollars for study in the IEP.
The letter of financial support must show that the student has enough money available to cover the educational and living expenses for the time he or she will be in the IEP. Most students think that it is more convenient to get a letter of financial support for one year (three sessions) than to get a new letter of financial support if they later decide to attend an additional session at the IEP. Therefore, we normally issue an I-20 for 12 months. The letter of financial support should show that the student has sufficient funds available for the estimated educational and living expenses for 12 months.
If you need an I-20 and want your I-20 to be for only one or two sessions, please use the comments section of the application to write a note telling us which sessions of the IEP you want to appear on your I-20. The letter of financial support should show that that you have sufficient funds available for the estimated educational and living expenses for those sessions.
